For a topical index of the Qur'an and Hadiths, this website has a good summary.

   The Myth: "Tiny Radical Minority"

Around the late 1980s, I decided to read the Qur'an. I did not want to discuss Islam without first having an understanding of the religion because I honestly had no knowledge, and only knew what other people said about the religion.

Once I began reading it, rather quickly I realized that this is a very different religion with no similarity to Judaism nor Christianity, something apologists have claimed incorrectly.

I had repeated heard that Islam is born of the same source as Judaism and Christianity, but when I read the Qur'an it was quickly apparent such assertions were not true.

When I arrived at the 2nd Sura, verses 105 and 106, I saw what comprises the primary foundation of Islam -- built upon the Jewish Torah, affirming or improving it.

More to come...

Additionally, I have researched for many years, and while some sites are obviously attempting to make people think Islam is not really any different or more violent than Judaism or Christianity, other sites are viciously anti-Islamic to the point of misrepresenting the Qur'an by changing the proper translation to make it seem worse than it is.

This is frustrating to me because I believe in "intellectual integrity", so I have actually used multiple translations of the original Qur'an to ensure a proper understanding. The copy of the Qur'an I have included on this website (in the column at right) is a scholarly translation widely used without any of the pro- or anti-Islamic modifications.

The Foundation of Islam
Islam is founded upon the belief that the Jews were traitorous to the original "book" (Torah) given to Moses by angels (Of course, Judeo-Christian belief is that it was given directly by God Himself), and that Christians had perverted the teachings of the prophet Jesus (not the son of God, nor God-incarnate). This is discussed directly in
Qur'an, Sura 5.41-50, very clearly damning the Jews and Christians for perverting the original revelations of God. I further discuss this below, but let's first consider "Why a new revelation?"

Why A New Revelation
The religion of Islam was established from an insistence that the descendents of Ham, Ishmael, and Esau (all of whom were cursed in some way, according to the Old Testament Torah) also have a Divine revelation.

The 4,000 years of curse under which these people groups have lived has never been broken. Rather than finding delivery from the valence of their forefathers, the Arab nations have perpetuated their hatred for Israel and embodied that bitterness in calls for the murder of all non-Muslims with an special hatred for Jews and Christians [Qur'an, Sura 5.51].

As for the main tenet of Islam, the key is the claim that the Jews (and later the Christians) have not been faithful to God's purpose (this ignores the promise God made to Abraham, Isaac, and Israel that they would forever be the chosen of God).

The entire faith of Islam is actually based on the one premise found in these two verses:

[Sura 2.105] Those who disbelieve from among the followers of the Book do not like,
nor do the polytheists, that the good should be sent down to you from
your Lord, and Allah chooses especially whom He pleases for His mercy,
and Allah is the Lord of mighty grace.

[Sura 2.106] Whatever communications We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We
bring one better than it or like it. Do you not know that Allah has power
                        over all things?

This is further reinforced in these verses:

[Sura 10.37] And this Quran is not such as could be forged by those besides Allah,
but it is a verification of that which is before it and a clear explanation
of the book, there is no doubt in it, from the Lord of the worlds.

[Sura 32.23] And certainly We gave the Book to Musa, so be not in doubt concerning
the receiving of it, and We made it a guide for the children of Israel.

[Sura 42.13] He has made plain to you of the religion what He enjoined upon Nuh and
that which We have revealed to you and that which We enjoined upon
Ibrahim and Musa and Isa that keep to obedience and be not divided
                       therein.
                             (In order: Nuh=Noah, Ibrahim=Abraham, Musa=Moses, Isa=Jesus)

There are more including: Suras 4.50 and 5.52 (Have you noticed yet that there is no logical order to the Qur'an? It's like the "angels" had all these things to tell Muhammad, and the result is a purée of religious language where everything is all mixed up and scattered throughout the 114 chapters/Suras in no meaningful chronology or logical arrangement.)

The True Source of Islam
Jesus is an acknowledged "prophet" in the Qur'an. Yet Jesus said in Matthew 5:18 that the Torah would not pass until the end of time.

The Apostle Paul also said in Galatians 1:8 "But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God's curse!"

Since the Qur'an reverses many things in the Torah and was delivered to Muhammad by "angels", what is the natural conclusion? (2 Cor 11:14).

The "book" referred to in the Qur'an is the Torah (first 5 books of the Old Testament representing the law given by God to Moses), and interestingly, in Sura 2.85 the Qur'an actually states that those who only believe in part of the Torah will burn in hell. It says:

"Do you then believe in a part of the Book and disbelieve in the other? What then is the re ward of such among you as do this but disgrace in the life of this world, and on the day of resurrection they shall be sent back to the most grievous chastisement, and Allah is not at all heedless of what you do."

The "polytheists" include the Christians who believe God has revealed himself in three persons. The "polytheists" also include Hindus and others.

Since Sura 2.106 clearly states that the new revelation will confirm or improve upon the "book" (i.e. Old Testament Torah), an analysis can easily confirm whether this is true.

While my initial inquiry into the teachings of Islam was to simply purchase and read a copy of the Qur'an, over the years I have expanded my inquiry to examine both pro-Islamic and anti-Islamic websites.

I find that often the pro-Islamic sites simply ignore (i.e. do not even address) their own scriptures that do not fit with the narrative they are trying to promote.

While some of the anti-Islamic sites are vitriolic (thus less valuable to me, seeking an intellectual honesty), some are balanced in that they will actually acknowledge commonality as well as diversity in the Qur'an and Hadiths.

Does Islam Live Up To Its Claims?
The table below is a very limited selection of topics and an analysis of the Torah (the law given to Moses) and of the Qur'an to show that Islam does not validate its main premise, because God has confirmed that He NEVER changes (see Numbers 23:19; Psalm 102:27; Hebrews 1:12, 13:8).

Here a just a few items that, for me, was conclusive that the Qur'an not live up to its claim (the 2nd Sura, verses 105 and 106). Such inconsistency with stated purpose and actual intent was sufficient for me to dismiss this religion as not acceptable to me.

Topic The Bible The Qur'an
Divorce

The Torah says that remarrying a woman after she has married another man is "detestable" to God (an "abomination") and a sin upon the land.

The Qur'an requires this, thus it is a reversal of the law of God given to Moses.

Deuteronomy 24:1-4
If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the LORD. Do not bring sin upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
Sura 2.230
So if he divorces her she shall not be lawful to him afterwards until she marries another husband; then if he divorces her there is no blame on them both if they return to each other (by marriage), if they think that they can keep within the limits of Allah, and these are the limits of Allah which He makes clear for a people who know.
Oaths

The Torah requires one to keep their oath.

The Qur'an does not require it.

Numbers 30
Extensive chapter about oaths and being sure to keep them.
Sura 2.225
Allah does not call you to account for what is vain in your oaths.
Who Named Animals

The Torah says that Adam named the animals.

The Qur'an says that Allah told Adam the name of the animals

Genesis 2:20
So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
Sura 2.31
And He taught Adam all the names, then presented them to the angels; then He said: Tell me the names of those if you are right.
The murder of Abel by Cain

The Torah says that Abel's sacrifice was pleasing but that Cain's was not. It does not give any reason as to why, but Cain's murder indicates a problem with his heart, specifically a jealousy and rage, such that the Judeo-Christian view is that Cain was selfish and self-centered.

The Qur'an itself only describes the sacrifice and murder and claims that Allah used a crow to teach Cain how to hide a murdered body, but many hundreds of years after the death of Muhammad, later narrations include a DIFFERENT reasoning of the jealousy of Cain.

Genesis 4:1-16
Adam was intimate with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, “I have had a male child with the Lord’s help.” Then she also gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel became a shepherd of flocks, but Cain worked the ground. In the course of time Cain presented some of the land’s produce as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also presented an offering—some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. The Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but He did not have regard for Cain and his offering. Cain was furious, and he looked despondent. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you furious? And why do you look despondent? If you do what is right, won’t you be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s guardian?” Then He said, “What have you done? Your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground! So now you are cursed, alienated, from the ground that opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood you have shed. If you work the ground, it will never again give you its yield. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.” But Cain answered the Lord, “My punishment is too great to bear! Since You are banishing me today from the soil, and I must hide myself from Your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth, whoever finds me will kill me.” Then the Lord replied to him, “In that case, whoever kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” And He placed a mark on Cain so that whoever found him would not kill him. Then Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
Sura 5.27-31
The Qur'an itself only describes the sacrifice and murder and claims that Allah used a crow to teach Cain how to hide a murdered body, but many hundreds of years after Muhammad's death, later narrations include a DIFFERENT reasoning of the jealousy of Cain. In Islam, Cain is called Qabil and Abel is called Habil.

Here is a quoted teaching from Islamic narratives:
"Several scholars among the Salaf and the later generations said that Allah allowed Adam to marry his daughters to his sons because of the necessity of such action. They also said that in every pregnancy, Adam was given a twin, a male and a female, and he used to give the female of one twin, to the male of the other twin, in marriage. Habil's sister was not beautiful while Qabil's sister was beautiful, resulting in Qabil wanting her for himself, instead of his brother. Adam refused unless they both offer a sacrifice, and he whose sacrifice was accepted, would marry Qabil's sister. Habil's sacrifice was accepted, while Qabil's sacrifice was rejected, and thus what Allah told us about them occurred. Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Ibn `Abbas said -- that during the time of Adam -- "The woman was not allowed in marriage for her male twin, but Adam was commanded to marry her to any of her other brothers. In each pregnancy, Adam was given a twin, a male and a female. A beautiful daughter was once born for Adam and another one that was not beautiful. So the twin brother of the ugly daughter said, `Marry your sister to me and I will marry my sister to you.' He said, `No, for I have more right to my sister.' So they both offered a sacrifice. The sacrifice of the one who offered the sheep was accepted while the sacrifice of the other ﴿the twin brother of the beautiful daughter﴾, which consisted of some produce, was not accepted. So the latter killed his brother.'' This story has a better than good chain of narration."

Tithe

The Torah clearly states 10% consistently, as do the prophets.

The Qur'an requires it, but does not tell us how much, rather one has to look to the Hadiths which have different percentages disbursed throughout those texts.

Bible (both Old and New Testaments)
For a full discussion of the tithe, click here.

Notice, in the Bible, the tithe is clearly God's and clearly defined. But in the Qur'an, it is NOT defined at all. Remember, Sura 2.206 states "Whatever communications We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or like it." Question: How is no definition "better" than clear definition?

At the most base level, the Zakat is 2.5% of certain assets, but not all. In the Bible, the tithe is always 10% of income (growth in assets).

Qur'an
There is no Qur'anic verse that gives the amount of the tithe, which in Islam is called "zakat".

In the Hadiths, it is confusing as to how much for it fluctuates depending on what assets or income one is considering when calculating what they are to give as a tithe/zakat. The most basic is 2.5% of certain assets, per the Hadiths (and not consistent for all assets).

Wikipedia tries to explain it HERE.

Sex in Heaven

The Bible indicates Heaven is non-sexual.

The Qur'an states that Heaven will have lots of sexual pleasures.

Multiple New Testament Verses
Jesus Christ affirms there is no marriage and we are non-sexual beings in heaven (Matt. 22:23-33; Mark 12:24-25; Luke 20:34-36).
Multiple Qur'an Verses
According to Muslim teaching, heaven is a garden of bliss, where faithful men are promised the companionship of young and beautiful women (Sura 37:48-49; 38:52-53; 52:20; 55:54-57, 70-77; 56:22-24, 35-40; 78:31-34; etc.).
Who Adopted Moses

The Bible states it was Pharoah's daughter.

The Qur'an states it was Pharoah's wife.

Exodus 2:10
When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh's daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, "I drew him out of the water."
Sura 28:9
And Firon's wife said: A refreshment of the eye to me and to you; do not slay him; maybe he will be useful to us, or we may take him for a son; and they did not perceive.
Blood Sacrifice

The Bible teaches that when God sees the blood, He passes over our sins.

The Qur'an teaches that Allah does not see the sacrifice or the blood, but sees the "godliness" in one's behavior.

Leviticus 17:11
The life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it for you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement, by reason of the life.

Hebrews 9:22
Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

Sura 22:34-37
We have appointed for every nation a holy rite that they may mention Allah's name over such beasts of the flocks as He has provided them ... And the beasts of sacrifice - We have appointed them for you as among Allah's waymarks; therein is good for you ... The flesh of them shall not reach Allah, neither their blood. But godliness from you shall reach Him.
Moses' Wife

The Qur'an gives a significantly different number of daughters to Moses' father-in-law.

Exodus 2:16-18
Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. And they came and drew water, and they filled the troughs to water their father’s flock. Then the shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock. When they came to Reuel their father, he said, 'How is it that you have come so soon today?' And they said, 'An Egyptian delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and he also drew enough water for us and watered the flock.' So he said to his daughters, 'And where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.'

Sura 28:23-27
And he [Moses] found beside them, two women keeping back their flock: 'Why do ye,' said he, 'thus?' They said, 'We shall not water till the shepherds shall have driven off; for our father is very aged'...One of them said, 'O my father, hire him: for the best thou canst hire is the strong, the trusty.' He said, 'Truly to one of these my two daughters I desire to marry thee'".

Sons of Noah

The Qur'an directly contradicts the Torah in the status of the sons of Noah at the time of the flood.

Genesis 9:18-19
The Bible teaches that Noah’s three sons entered into the ark, were delivered from destruction, and helped repopulate the earth.
Sura 11:42-43
And it moved on with them amid waves like mountains; and Nuh called out to his son, and he was aloof: O my son! embark with us and be not with the unbelievers. He said: I will betake myself for refuge to a mountain that shall protect me from the water. Nuh said: There is no protector today from Allah's punishment but He Who has mercy; and a wave intervened between them, so he was of the drowned.
Crucifixion of Jesus

The Bible teaches that Jesus was crucified for our sins, buried, and then raised from the dead.

The Qur'an flat out denies this, while yet stating Jesus was an Apostle/Prophet of Allah.

Multiple Bible Verses
Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 19... and many other references throughout the Epistles of the Apostles.
Sura 4.157
They (the Jews) said (in boast), 'We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Apostle of Allah', - but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them

Conclusion
True prophecy comes to pass just as the inspired messenger foreshadowed. If the prophecy fails, the prophet is rightly counted as false (Deut. 18:22; Jer. 28:1-17). By the same token, if a later prophet contradicts an earlier prophet, both cannot be true. One or the other is false.

The Qur'an, the holy book of Islam, does NOT claim to be an independent revelation; rather, it affirms the validity of the Bible, and claims to build upon its teaching. Nevertheless, the Qur'an contradicts the teaching of the Bible. Therefore, based upon this internal contradiction, the rules of reason and revelation affirm that the Qur'an cannot be true (Gal. 1:6-9; 2 Pet. 3:14-18).

Further, Jesus is an acknowledged "prophet" in the Qur'an. Yet Jesus said in Matthew 5:18 that the Torah would not pass until the end of time. The Apostle Paul also said in Galatians 1:8 "But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God's curse!" Since the Qur'an reverses many things in the Torah and was delivered to Muhammad by "angels", the natural conclusion is that "cursed angels" are the source of the Qur'anic revelation. This is no surprise, for Paul also says that Satan masquerades as an angel of light (2 Cor 11:14).

Jews and Christians are Apostate, So States the Qur'an, Thus Never Have Friendship with Them
You see, the "angels" that delivered the Qur'an to Muhammad clearly state that the Jews and Christians are apostate, failing to live up to the original revelations given in the times before Muhammad [Qur'an, Sura 5.41-50] and because of that Allah has given the clear revelation to Muhammad. Further, the "angels" immediately follow that with an instruction to Muhammad that if a Muslim actually becomes friends with Jews or Christians, they are damned to Hell for all eternity [Qur'an, Sura 5.51 and Sura 4.144-146].

In my research, I have come across one particular site that I believe is a genuinely honest appraisal of the teachings of the Qur'an and Hadiths. It also has detailed documentation of terrorism since 9/11/2001. The Qur'anic texts quoted are correct without the misrepresentations that some sites who are rabidly anti-Islamic include. Understanding the "Valences" Descended from the Table of Nations

All nations of the Earth find their origin as recorded in Genesis 10 and all people of the Earth derive from Noah. This is an historical fact, regardless of religious affiliation, or atheism. The table of nations and the genealogy of nations leading to God's covenant with Abraham contains the key to understanding both our current drama of the 21st century, and also to the bitterness experienced among the various "races" of mankind.

It is a matter of history that the Earth has been populated from the descendents of Noah and his sons' children as they dispersed across the Earth. Japheth and his children populated the northern territories, both east and west. Shem and his children populated the middle eastern areas. Ham and his children migrated into the lands that are now Israel and also into the African continent.

The curse of Ham's son (Canaan) for his father's ridicule of Noah, the chosen of God to provide deliverance for mankind from the flood, has never been overcome. In fact, the curse of Canaan is sometimes viewed by religious historians as a curse against the entire family of Ham. (His sons are Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan, representing the peoples of Ethiopia/Sudan, Egypt, Libya, and Palestine respectively giving rise to the populations of the dark skinned races.)

Also, many years later, the curses of both Ishmael and Esau have always plagued the majority of those who populate the Palestinian, Persian, Arabian, and Egyptian areas. Thus through Ham, and select descendants of Shem, came all the curses that plague the various races of humanity who demonstrate such anger and hatred in the world today.

These facts remain today to be troubling realities for the descendents of Noah's sons. Either consciously or unconsciously, the hostility demonstrated by these descendents toward those who have been "blessed" is inherent in their world view. In acknowledging this historical reality, a bitter denial is anticipated, yet the facts remain. The error of those thus embittered is in the incorporation of the curses into their own present time experience. This means that those thus embittered are living in the "valence" of a distant ancestor.

VALENCE means "the capacity of one person or thing to react with or affect another in some special way, as by attraction or the facilitation of a function or activity", and "The degree of attraction or aversion that an individual feels toward a specific object or event".

Valences determine the functioning rules of one's universe. Think of this as being influenced by an ancestor's reality such that it fashions one's view of the world and one's position within that world, and also such that its unstated presence governs events in one's life and one's reactions to those events.

Because these curses are historical fact and their utterance became universal truths, many individuals today live in that ancient valence. They are angry and they deny the true source. As a result, their anger and hatred are passed from one generation to the next, and may even have demonstrated their permanence as self-fulfilled prophecies--such as occurred through slavery or as in defiance of history by demanding a different Divine revelation.

The correct solution is to recognize and rise above the valence of historical record such that each individual can be freed from multi-generational servitude to that valence. The curses are thousands of years past, yet they persist to each new generation only because the descendents of those who were cursed have never broken the cycle of bondage.

Examine what groups are angry and consider who carries immutable "chips on their shoulders". When any such group is identified, then trace their lineage to the table of nations and you will find the original curse that plagues the progeny. This endeavor reveals the true source of the collective pain perpetuated within the identified group, and more importantly, correctly identifies the first elemental valence (perhaps the first of many) in which they live.

With that certain knowledge, true freedom awaits their grasp.
