(In My Opinion)
Background
Journey was, and still is, one of the greatest bands of all time.
Over the years, when Steve Perry needed hip surgery and delayed it
for unexplained reasons, Journey severed it's relationship and
sought a replacement
singer so they could continue touring. The
replacement singers they used were never quite the right sound for
the legacy songs. In fact, for a few years, Deen Castronovo ended
up being "lead singer" even though he was the drummer, because his
voice is truly fantastic, as is his drumming (see
him sing Mother, Father here). I am sure those times
wore him out, having to sing as well as playing the drums.
Then they found Arnel Pineda. He is
truly a stunning, soaring tenor, equal to, or possibly even better
than, Steve Perry. See the video below at right, from CBS Sunday
Morning ("A Summer Song") which aired on June 1, 2008 and
described how Journey
found Arnel Pineda and brought him into the band.
On June 3, 2008
(I bought it that very morning at WalMart), the band released
REVELATION after
re-recording legacy songs with Arnel singing them, and a second CD
with new songs never before heard, all sung by Arnel. This
release including a third disk which was a DVD of a live
performance with Arnel in Las Vegas.
