Lacie and Leo

My Letter to Lacie

Bishon Frise
Birthdate: July 25, 2010
Date of Death: February 4, 2024

When Leo was having too much trouble with his hips and legs to go up and down the stairs at Kassie's daughter's home, he came to live with us at the lake.

Watching Star Trek TNG
Video of him barking at Spot

Leo was such an amazing dog. He was so happy and he loved to get on the furniture, something that was new for him in my home.

He loved watching TV and barking at all the animals on whatever show I was watching. He also became a fan of the various Star Trek series that I enjoyed re-watching.

Here is Leo the Star Trek fan barking at the TV (a video that may take a moment to download).

Leo was very happy in this house of four dogs (Scalia, Darla, and Buddy) and was fully a part of the pack-family.

In spite of his difficulty with his hips and legs, he got around well, and he always "skipped" through the house each day. He was so cute... his "skipping" gait!!

Leo loved watching TV as can be seen here:

Watching Yellowstone

Watching Handmaid's Tale

Watching Star Trek DS9

Watching Football

After two years of living here, he began to deteriorate, and when I felt his enlarged throat and saw that he had difficulty, and possibly pain, when swallowing, he had stopped eating his daily chew stick, and eventually was not eating anything. His throat was swollen and he was nearing his end.

I was also having to take him out and carry him everywhere in my arms, as his legs were no longer cooperating for him to walk. I did this for three months, wanting to extend his life as long as possible.

But when I knew he was not comfortable, I prepared for his passing. This devastated me, but when his time came, I was with him to his final breath. He was laying on my bed pillow so he could smell me, and I was holding his face and looking him directly into his eyes, only inches from his nose as he took his final breath. It broke my heart.

Leo loved being on the deck
every day and getting sunshine!

Toward the end, just before his time to pass, he was thinning and too tired.

When he died, I put a stone at the top of his grave. He is buried beside Gypsy.
