Theme Week 6 =
Davidoff
This week's 'theme' will be Davidoff.
History
The history of Zino Davidoff cigars is a story of a Jewish man who
became a leader in the cigar industry, creating a brand that is
still powerful today. Zino Davidoff was born in 1906 in
Novhorod-Siverskyi, which was part of the Russian Empire at the
time but is now in Ukraine.
Zino was born into a family of
tobacconists. His father, Henri, owned a tobacco business in Kiev,
Ukraine. In 1911, the Davidoff family fled to Geneva, Switzerland
to escape political factions in Ukraine. As a teenager, Zino
traveled to Latin America, including Cuba, to learn about the
cigar trade. Around 1930, Zino took over the family shop in
Geneva.
Zino invented the desktop humidor to preserve cigars at
the ideal temperature and humidity. Zino created the "Chateau" and
"Grand Cru" cigar lines, named after the wines of Bordeaux.
During
World War II, Zino's business became a source of cigars for
leaders on both sides of the conflict.
In 1970, the Max Oettinger
company acquired the Davidoff business, but Zino remained as an
ambassador. Zino Davidoff's name is still one of the most powerful
in the luxury product industry.
