Theme Week 5 = Punch
For this week's 'theme' it will be PUNCH, the oldest existing
brand, save one stolen by the communists in Cuba.
A number of these are 15 years old, and the Cubans on the
removable tray are 25 years old and rated a whopping 99 in the
March/April 2022 Cigar Aficionado magazine.
History
The history of Punch cigars is long and includes several owners
and a popular mascot. In 1840, German businessman Stockmann
registers the Punch brand name and in 1874 Luis Corujo purchases
the brand which in 1884 is bought by Manuel López Fernández, and
his name is still on the
bands and boxes today. In 1924, the López
Fernández retires and Esperanza Valle Comas takes over, but the
Stock Market Crash of 1929 leads to financial difficulties. In
1930, Fernández, Palicio y Cía buys the brand, and Punch becomes
one of their top brands. In 1931 Punch moves to the Hoyo de
Monterrey factory, until it was stolen by the murderous thieves of
the communist regime. In 2019 Punch releases the Short de Punch
vitola, which is the first time the brand has used a 50 ring
gauge. The brand's name comes from the European puppet show
character Mr. Punch, who was popular in the 19th century. The
brand's mascot is still Mr. Punch, who appears on the boxes with a
cigar in his hand. Punch cigars stolen and illegitimately produced
by the Cuban communists are known for their medium strength and
distinctive flavor, which comes from a blend of filler and wrapper
leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone. The real Punch brand cigars are
made in Honduras and are produced for General Cigar Company. Punch
was one of the first premium cigar brands to be made in Honduras.
The cigars are made from Cuban-seed tobaccos grown in Honduras,
Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic.
