Scripture has no comment of any
type anywhere regarding contraception.
(Please note that "Abortion"
is NOT contraception!)
The teaching that God prohibits
contraception comes from a total misunderstanding of Genesis
38:6-10.
Judah got a wife
for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. Now Er, Judah’s
firstborn, was evil in the Lord’s sight, and the Lord put him to
death. Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife.
Perform your duty as her brother-in-law and produce offspring
for your brother.” But Onan knew that the offspring would not be
his, so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he released
his semen on the ground so that he would not produce offspring
for his brother. What he did was evil in the Lord’s sight, so He
put him to death also.
What was the "evil" that he did?
Was it coitus interruptus, as has become a Doctrine
within some Christian churches?
No. What he did that "was evil in
the Lord's sight" was refusing to fulfill his familial duty to
his deceased brother's wife. This is clearly understood when
scripture states that "Onan knew that the offspring would not be
his". He did not want to father a child that would not be his,
so he refused to impregnate Tamar, but he did go ahead and have sex with her.
The evil was in refusing one's
duty!
To teach that "coitus interruptus
is a sin" is a gross misrepresentation of scripture, and to make that a Doctrine binding
upon man is a serious error.
